what is rape?
“Rape, sometimes also called sexual assault, can happen to both men and women of any age. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines rape as: ‘The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.’ (TeensHealth)” According to RAINN, rape, abuse & incest national network, every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted, and 44% of victims are under the age of 18. Approximately 2/3 of assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. Also, 38% of rapists are a friend or acquaintance. Many feel safe when they are around people they know, but it is more likely that one will be raped by a friend or acquaintance than by a stranger.
